Second chances?

by agirlandhermutt on July 9, 2010

I have a question and I would love some input from my fellow food/restaurant lovers. Do you give restaurants second, even third chances? If you had a bad experience at a restaurant, or even just a “meh” experience, would you go another night to try again? Last night I met up with my buddy Kyle for some good ol’ fashioned girl bonding, dinner and drinks. I had been to this restaurant before and enjoyed it. Last night though? Yea, not so much. Should I mark this down as just an off day?

I understand off days. I had one myself yesterday. I was in traffic for 45 minutes on the way to work (typically 15 minutes). I couldn’t manage to lift nearly as much in Body Pump as I normally do AND even dropped a weight when doing triceps (so embarassing!). My ponytail was giving me a headache. See? Off day. But I don’t get paid to Body Pump. The restaurant does get paid to give me decent food.

So let me SHOW you how this went down.

Before I left I checked the menu to figure out what I would have for dinner. I knew I was going for the “Quinoa-Crusted & Seared Salmon Salad with berry-chipotle salsa & sweet potato croutons over frisée in watercress vinaigrette”. Doesn’t that sound just lovely and fresh?!

This is what was brought out to me.

See that salmon? It appears bigger than it really was. It was probably a little bit smaller than a post-it note.  For some reason, there were also burnt pieces of salmon laying around on the plate too.

Do you see the sweet potato croutons or berry salsa? Me neither. I did some digging around and found this.

Yep. That is 6 slightly frozen blueberries and 1 sliver of strawberry that they called “salsa”. The bits of dried up sweet potato are the “croutons”. Mmm hmmm. Right. The watercress vinaigrette was fantastic and surprisingly the bite of salmon was cooked pretty well, but other than that…

OH! And did I mention this was $14?!

Kyle’s nachos weren’t much better. I only tried one chip, but eww.  Greasy chips. Cold chicken on top. Lukewarm and thick cheese. She asked for them to be heated up more and they came back out the EXACT same temperature. Ugh.

So I ask you…would you give them another chance? Do you send meals back? Do you write reviews online to complain? Do you do nothing and just consider it a lesson learned?!

Tell me what you do when you have a bad restaurant experience!

I’ll usually do a second chance, but after that, I’m done. I always feel bad writing something off after one chance. Sorry you had a bad experience!

@ Minday–I feel bad too! I’m not sure why though. Why would I continue to pay money for a crap meal?!

@ Dorry–There are seriously TONS of restaurants in the area. However, it never fails that someone plans a meal at a place that I’ve decided to shun.

1st of all, I really understand the ponytail headaches! As far as restaurants go, I probably wouldn’t make it a point to go back if I wasn’t pleased with the meal (there are too many great restaurants out there!)…but if someone else planned a dinner there, I’d give it a shot and order something different. I get super bummed when I’m not happy with my meal at a restaurant – I think I’ve probably embarrassed my fiance by sending things back when they didn’t taste good! Also, I’m like you and look at the menu ahead of time so maybe that gives us big expectations of what to expect. 🙂 Happy Friday!

Oh I’d be disappointed with that plate too and would probably just try somewhere new next time!

I would have to say no, now. I have in the past, several times. When I give them my hard earned money AGAIN for bad, hardly eaten, will have to go home and wash snack dishes any way food it HURTS! I live in Denver so there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from. I NEVER send food back. That is asking for them to spit on it or something LOL Once at TGI Friday’s the manager said WOW! You love this lemonade! He was filling my glass for the third time LOL I said I can’t get this burger down. I was on like bite #2 and still had not swallowed it LOL. He looks at it and the wax paper was on the cheese. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww So that did go back and he brought a new one. I was full, too much lemonade, LOL and he paid for my meal. That sort of bad food is funny to me. But cold yuck food, no thanks. Then what really sucks is you don’t want to tip the waitress/er 20% but s/he had nothing to do with the way the food was cooked!

Dude, I’ve given this place 4 chances. Every single time, I’m disappointed. No mas!

@Noelle, I always tip if the service is good, no matter if the food wasn’t. 🙂 I’m a good restaurant visitor!

@SimplyLife…I definitely will try a new place! Too many to choose to pick from.
