When East Meets West…

by agirlandhermutt on March 9, 2011

Fusion cuisine can take on various forms. Sometimes it’s a mix of different cuisines or regions. Other times it can be foods that are based in one cuisine, but prepared with ingredients that are from another. The best of both worlds, right?!

Its no secret that I’m a fan of Indian food so when I saw a cooking class at the local Community Education center for Fusion Indian I jumped at the chance to give it a shot!

Tonight I showed up to the high school were the classes were and was met with a maze of hallways. When did high schools get so big?!

I graduated with 421 in my class which is pretty big, but this school was ENORMOUS. The murals were a nice touch though.

When the class started first up was an introduction to Indian spices. Our instructor told us all about each of the major spices and I was pleasantly surprised to realize that I recognized almost all of them. *Pat on the back!*

We made 3 dishes over the evening along with a mango lassi (yogurt drink).

-Spaghetti with veggies
-Mushroom Bake
-Aloo Quesadillas

I was put to work first on making the green chutney with my partner, Karen.

Ohhai 1970s blender!

I made that chutney SPICY. Makes you almost sweat spicy. Winking smile

I was also in charge of the mango lassi, my specialty!

CHEERS!

I was also a great observer as the other students made other parts of the meal.

Hey Look…Karen is the spaghetti girl! *whistle whistle* Looking good Karen!

The pasta dish had TONS of veggies that smelled so good I wanted to eat them out of the pot.

Our entire class was in this high school kitchen. I was so impressed that they have cooking classes. I’m pretty sure this didn’t go down at my high school, but if it did, you can rest assured that I wouldn’t have been interested.

Final result!

Spaghetti with veggies

Aloo quesadilla

Mushroom Bake

My favorite part of any meal these days…leftovers! I plan to shove all these at The Scientist and brag about my Indian cooking skills. Winking smile

Happily I learned a few new dishes AND I also marked off an item from my 31 While 31, #11 Take a Cooking Class! I’m pretty excited to do this one because it was on my 30 While 30 list too. WOOT! Big thumbs up to Karen for encouraging this one.

*Rubbing hands together* Now what is next?!

Have you ever taken a community education classes?

This isn’t my first class through the community education group. They have TONS of classes with so much variety. I’m dying to try the Food Writing course.

Did you go to a big high school? Did it have cooking classes?

My high school was large, but not nearly this big. I don’t think we had cooking but we did have Ag, Auto Body, and Fabrics & Fiber. I’ll let you guess which classes I took. Winking smile

I loved taking community education cooking classes when I lived in Boston. New York definitely has cooking schools, haven’t found any community/adult education.

They can’t exist if you haven’t found them! :)

this looks like tasty fun!!

I LOVE cooking classes! we have a great cooking store with an awesome class area, and I have taken many classes there… we received the community college catalog yesterday, and the first place I looked is cooking! I may take some for fun…

we didn’t have cooking in high school (my graduating class was BIG!), but we did have a basic home economics in junior high, and I loved it.

I think we had a home ec and I might have sewn a pair of boxer shorts. Weird when I think about it.

I’ve never taken a cooking class but its on my list of things to do. I never think to check out community classes like this!

I graduated in a class of 62 girls. My entire high school was about 300 students, smaller than most people’s senior class!

Wow! 62 people! You definitely knew everyone. :)

Cooking class…you and I have a future date!

I’ve never taken a community class but would absolutely love to!

They had cooking classes in high school, which I took one of, but way back then I was so BAD at cooking. Thank goodness I’ve come such a long way :)

I’m with ya on coming far in life. Domestic skills were not my specialty in high school. ;)

Those dishes look so tasty!! Take a cooking class is on my list of goals this year too! I should look up local community classes to see if I can find something. And a food writing course?? That would be fantastic – I would love that class!

They never had anything as cool when I was in highschool ~ my how times have changed.

I think the food writing course would be so interesting. Our community education program has such a wide variety of classes!

I loved working with everyone. Its not often I get help in the kitchen so it was cool to see how people did things differently.

We had a kitchen just like that. The class was called Home Ec. We sewed and cooked it was a blast! Your nails look fantastic. I want to know what do they feel like? Are the rough?

The spaghetti with veggies looks delicious! Love the idea of a cooking class. It’s such a trip to go into a high school now. Makes me feel ancient.

The spaghetti was what I was most surprised by. It had such cool Indian food flavors but the old traditional feeling too.

Ancient is the perfect description!

I have taken a cooking class, but not a community education one. And my highschool was all girls and only 75 per class. No cooking classes there!

So many of you went to small girls schools! I think I would have loved a smaller school.

I went to a pretty large high school – about 315 in my graduating class – and from what I know it has gotten larger since. We had a cooking class but I think it was called Foods & Nutrition or something along those lines. There was woodshop, auto shop, and I want to say something else electical based – I recall odd switches/wiring displays in hall cases vaguely.

Best part of F & N class though = holiday cakes. My group’s had caroling gummie worms. There is a picture somewhere that if I can find will be part of a post.

Ohhhh the spaghetti looks fab! YUM! My high school was pretty big but I have no idea about them offering cooking. My electives were taken up by band (since I did dance team) and Show Choir (think Glee). :D

I was a band nerd. :) I wish I could have done a Show Choir though!
