Can you pinpoint times in your life when you heard a song over and over? Like a song will come on the radio and instantly you can remember a specific moment or time in your life. Whenever I hear The Wallflowers One Headlight (which is more often than you would think) I immediately think of a summer I spent almost every waking moment at the beach with my BFF in high school. When I hear No Doubt’s I’m Just a Girl I am instantly transported back to high school when I was driving down the street in my red Chevy Nova (with a No Fear sticker across the front window…don’t hate!) with the sunroof opening.
I also have some weird songs that I connect to my parents like Poison’s Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Barbara Streisand’s People, and off the Nilsson Schmilsson album, Coconut. You know, “She put the lime in the coconut, she drank ‘em both up.” My family is a bit weird.
Most recently though my big music association is anything and everything Girl Talk. I listened to two of his albums, Night Ripper and Feed the Animals, back to back to back while training for the Avon Walk. I was training to walk 39.3 over two days and I needed music to pump me up. Girl Talk was perfect for that.
Just in case you don’t know who Girl Talk is and you are imagining some silly girl band. Fear not. It is really just one nerdy white guy named Gregg Gillis. He is the master of digital remixing and mashing up songs. Check out him talking about who he is and what he does.
Last Friday, while everyone was partying it up at the HLS cocktail party, I was jumping around like a lunatic at the Girl Talk concert. I had heard rumors that it was like a big rave party. They weren’t lying. It was hot, sweaty, loud, obnoxious, and filled with confetti. It was FANTASTIC.
The concert was at this outdoor venue that is partly-covered. The stage and most of the seats have a roof, but there is some totally exposed seating too. It is right on the water and the perfect spot to become a complete and utter sweaty mess.
I didn’t realize that everyone and their mom would be wearing neon so I just wore an old grey tshirt, shorts, and my converse. Do you understand how much neon I have?! This was the perfect time for it and I totally missed the boat.
Throughout the show they threw out confetti, huge rolls of toilet paper, balloons and big tubes filled with water. It kept people screaming all night long!
I took some video but it was really pathetic. Mostly because I was jumping around so its just a hot mess. Instead I’m including some video that will give you an idea of what his concerts are like. My fave part is when he mixes Kelly Clarkson’s song. If you fast forward to the 2:00 mark in this video you can get an idea of how excited people get for this mix! Oh, if you don’t care for some dirty language then consider yourself warned.
If you get a chance to go to a Girl Talk concert I totally recommend it. It is so fun and just is a HUGE party! Wear that neon too. Make this girl proud!
Oh, and if you are looking for really fun workout songs…YOU.MUST.LISTEN. to Girl Talk!

Looks like fun! I hadn’t heard of them, so I am going to have to check it out. But I am so totally like you in that certain songs always remind me of particular things. And strange songs especially in our family.
Maybe it’s an only child thing to get super fun parents with strange musical tastes?
Possibly! Yet another wonderful thing about only children families!
WOW! That looks like a hell of a workout! Oh and I LOVE dirty language *SNORT*
I know you do.
Jealous that you got to see Girl Talk, though that video makes it seem like a live show could be a little intense for me. Thanks for sharing!
It is really really intense. You need to like people randomly touching you and bumping you around.
