Korky Update!

by agirlandhermutt on August 28, 2012

Hi friends! Thanks for crossing all those fingers for my parents. It looks like the hurricane has moved a little to the left and they aren’t in the direct path. There is sure to be some rain and wind, but hopefully nothing major. I’m keeping my eye on you Isaac.

Another update! Apparently I was accidentally cryptic about Korky’s issues over the past few weeks because I got several emails and tweets asking what the heck was up with him. Oops!

Korky had been scratching up a storm before I left for BlogHer and it only got worse while I was gone. When I got back into town I decided to take him to the vet to get everything checked out. ON THE WAY THERE he somehow injured himself. To this day I have no idea what he did. I’m not sure if he jumped off my really high royalty bed and hurt himself or if he pulled something while scratching, but whatever he did he wouldn’t let me touch him and made this awful screeching noise whenever someone came near him. It was just heartbreaking!

Oh, and I didn’t make it to the vet that day because my car broke down randomly. Awesome.

The next day I was at the vet getting him checked out. The scratching had stopped but the pain was still there. It ended up that he had injured his neck in some way. We decided not to do x-rays until after trying rest and pain pills for a week. Fortunately after 1 week he seemed to be feeling much better.

Then the scratching started back. Back to the vet we went! Final verdict was that he had a superficial case of pyoderma, a skin infection. He was given some antibiotics, a special cream for a few hot spots and a shampoo that I need to use 2x/week for the next 6 weeks.

He has officially stopped scratching. He walks with no limp. I can pick him up and carry him around with no screeching. He ate a chapstick two days ago. Life is back to normal! Well, as normal as it gets.

If you have pets then I’m sure you can relate to the awful feeling of not really knowing what is going on. Korky is, as I fondly say, a little dumb. Korky is a rescue dog and from that comes a set of unique challenges (another story, antoher time!) but it all results in this cute little face.

I’m so glad to report that Kork is on the mend and seems to be at almost 100% these days. He turned 12 this year so I know some health issues come with old age, but I just don’t handle those things very well. I need to toughen up! In my head he is still that scraggly little puppy that I adopted.

Thanks for the kind words and checking in on the Mutt. We both appreciate it!

Beach Week kicked officially kicked off yesterday and I’m on Day 4 of the 5 Day Slim Down! It hasn’t been that difficult since its mostly just eating a TONF of veggies and fruits. Fortuantely I have all that CSA goodness to use up!

Yesterday’s meals consisted of yogurt w/ blueberries (reused photo alert!), black bean patties from the TIU plan w/ salad and clementines, and a Chipotle Salad (lettuce, a little brown rice, chicken and mild salsa). There were some random kiwis and an apple thrown in there too. I topped the whole thing off with a nice dose of sweaty She Sells Seashells by the Seashore + Sunkissed Abs workout.

Have a great day and I will see you tomorrow!

Has your pet ever had a health scare? Are you as big of a baby about it as I am?!

I’m glad Korky is on the mend! I hate when there is something wrong — it’s hard seeing our pups not feeling quite right when they can’t tell us what the problem is. I tend to freak out and head straight to the vet. I’m a little neurotic like that and my vet has benefited financially from it :-)

Ooof, I hear ya on these rescue pups! Mine contracted Lyme disease when I was in Boston, and now she has to have her anal glands expressed every month otherwise she yelps in pain every 15 minutes or so. However, per problems don’t come close to my last pup- that one was epileptic, had a thyroid problem, had cancerous rumors in her rib cage, 4 surgeries and 3 months of radiation, she used to snort fox tails on walks and we had to have her about opened three times to get them out, and had her stomach pumped a bunch of times for eating any stakes. Few, I’m out of breath!

Ahhhhhh, Korky!! I had no idea this stuff was going on, I’m so sorry to hear he was in pain (and I’m sure worrying you to death). So happy the pup is better :)

glad to know Kork is getting better. eating chapstick – yep, getting better!

it totally drives me into a tailspin when something is wrong with my animals… right now my mom is dealing with some issues with Elwood, one of her dachshunds… had to have surgery last week and is recovering from that. tough stuff, and his brother Jake is upset and lost.

pets are a huge part of our life… I don’t think I knew Korky was a rescue? perhaps I did and forgot… that is cool :)
