New Kitchen Gadget!

by agirlandhermutt on November 6, 2012

I love kitchen tools. Infomercials were specifically created for people like me. If the item looks cool and potentially helpful (or silly) then it will find it’s way into my kitchen. I was an original owner of the Bullet and I’m a frequent user of the Tortilla Bowl makers. Google it and then come back to make fun of me. Right now I’m trying to talk myself out of the Xpress Redi-Set-Go gadget. I know it is crap, but I WANT it.

My most recent obsession that I gave in to is a spiralizer. This is not a new tool, but one that I had held off on getting because I have a mandolin that I thought could do the trick. Then I realized I didn’t want to be all pedestrian with flat zucchini noodles when I could get high tech and have noodle like zucchini noodles.

Meet the World Cuisine Tri-Blade Plastic Vegetable Slicer!

The slicer is a hand cranked tool that has 3 interchangable blades that are all stored in the base of the tool to achieve 3 different types of cuts. The blade that I’m using in this photo is the 1/8-inch spacing that makes a spaghetti like cut, but there is also a 1/4-inch for larger curly ribbon cuts and a flat blade for more flat cuts.

On the bottom of the slicer there are 4 suction cups that help to steady the tool. If you make sure to put the slicer on top of a hard and sturdy surface you shouldn’t have any issues with the slicer sliding around.

Once you have it all set up on the counter, just slice the end of your fruit or veggie off to get a flat surface and position it between the blade and the pronged side. The prongs help to secure the item so you can then start to rotate the crank handle.

Easy peasy spaghetti!

The only slight weird (and a little wasteful) part about the slicer is that it leaves a core each time. This is fine with something bigger like zucchini or potatoes, but with smaller items like radishes or carrots this uses up quite a bit of the veggie.

I’ve been spiralizing tons of things lately but my favorite is definitely zucchini. It makes for a great pasta substitution and isn’t as much work as cooking a spaghetti squash. Not that cooking squash is particularly hard, just a little time intensive.

I’ve recently become obsessed with a YouTuber, Megan Elizabeth, who has a raw food channel called Easy To Be Raw. I was searching for some zucchini pasta recipes and came across this channel and she uses the exact same gadget. I’m not sure I agree with her way of eating (to each their own), but I do enjoy some of her recipes including this one for spaghetti sauce.

I whipped up a big ol’ batch of pasta the other night and topped it with a little nutritional yeast. Not a heat source was used for this meal!

This fun little slicer has been one of my favorite gadgets to date and I used it all last month. It definitely made the October favorites list and I see it sticking around for awhile. I have big plans for other types of sauces  on my veggie noodles!

That looks awesome! But I think my hubby would roll his eyes at me if I said that I wanted another kitchen gadget 😛 He got me the Slap Chop a few years ago as a joke and I feel awful that I never have used it… We have so many different gizmos now from our wedding that I really should start using!

I almost fell for the slap chop, but resisted. I’m pleased with this one so far. Lets see how long that lasts! 😉

Thanks! I’ve been brushing it more lately. 😉

I’m with ya on the kitchen. I have a lot of tools but not nearly enough space. (Hoarder!)
