34th Birthday Celebration!

by agirlandhermutt on February 21, 2014

Hello, hello, hello! The last time we chatted was my birthday (last Thursday!) so let’s pick up there and get all caught up. I have so much I want to tell you and document for my future forgetful self!

The majority of my birthday was spent at work. I had to get there early and I left a little late. Such is life. There was also a really fun snowstorm to make everything super entertaining.

I had plans to go to a special yoga class through Back Bay Yoga at the Harvard Club with the BF and Megan.Unfortunately the BF came down with a fierce cough a few days prior so Megan and I enjoyed a girlie yoga date.

The combination of the cold and snow with the cozy fireplaces at the Harvard Club made for the perfect OMMMxperience.

In addition the unique venue for class, there were also live musicians playing. I’m telling ya, if you ever get a chance to do yoga to live music, YOU MUST. It was just really cool. I don’t even have a better description than that.

Although the BF (who I should mention is now a fiancé but I don’t know how to abbreviate that so we will continue to call him the BF ;) ) was feeling a bit under the weather most of the week, he rallied to take me on my annual birthday trip. This time we stuck close to home and headed up to Portsmouth, NH for a few days.

On our way there we made a few pit stops including one to a previous favorite, Jewell Towne Vineyards.

Our next stop was at a newer brewery in Newburyport that we had been hearing great things about, Newburyport Brewing Company.

The brewery itself is in a little industrial park-looking area. It isn’t a super fancy looking place from the outside, but the beer inside?! AMAZING! They are doing some really great things at this brewery, including embracing the canning trend. Which I love.

They have a double IPA that is out of this world. It doesn’t come canned, but if it ever does? I will clear their shelves of it completely!

It was Valentine’s Day so they were giving out little tastes of one of their special Belgian Dubbel and little cake bites from Eat Cake. I had no idea that cake and beer paired so well together. Happy birthday to me with the perfect little treat!

We will definitely be back to NBPTBrewing soon! Until then I will be rollin’ around in this little sweatshirt with their logo on it that the BF got me.

Fun Fact: I like all clothing items that are brewery related. But if it is a hoodie?! I’m in love.

Portsmouth is only about an hour or so from my house and is a pretty easy drive so we often stop into town after a beach visit or on a random Saturday. We have a few long-time faves for food and we visited one for dinner that night. Flatbreads!

I adore their pizza but my biggest tip, and one I often forget myself, is to stick to the pizzas on the menu. The specials always sound great, but never quite live up to the tried and true menu pizzas.

On the way home we came across a club that could be heard pumpin’ all the way from the parking garage across the street. I couldn’t help but laugh. Apparently NH folks don’t let a little snow stop them from partying.

The plans was to hit up Portland, ME on Saturday but the forecast was calling for some serious snowfall. We decided to stick close to home and just wonder around downtown Portsmouth. There are TONS of little cute shops, restaurants and bars to keep anyone entertained for a few hours.

I’m glad we stayed put because the snow AND ICE ended up being pretty overwhelming at a few points.

Dinner was a good ol’ fashioned sushi extravaganza. Erin and sushi are a must around the birthday!

This is going to sound totally lame, but we ended up just heading back to our hotel after dinner. We cuddled up and watched tv, played around on our ipads and just enjoyed not really having to do anything. No walking Korky in the freezing cold. No housework. No phone calls. Nada. It was lovely! Being 34 never felt so good.

On Sunday morning we wanted to hit brunch before heading back home. This is where things went downhill. Not because the food was bad, but because we just ate WAY TOO MUCH. It was overload. But just.so.good.

Brunch was at Street. I had the B.A.S.H., bacon, avocado, scrambled eggs and hollandaise, all riding a crispy butter-grilled bun, and a Blood Mary. I then wanted to lay down and juts die. Or nap. Either one would have worked. UGH.

We were both in need of a quick pick-me-up before the drive home so we stopped at our regular beach spot so I could see if snow actually lays on the sand. I’ve always wondered about that!

Turns out…it does!

Despite a slightly sick partner-in-crime and some serious snow, I had a fantastic birthday trip!

The indulgences were a bit much so the minute we got back to Boston the gym clothes were thrown on and we were off to the gym. I did some interval work on the elliptical and tried to sweat out all the beer, bacon and avocado from my system.

So what is coming up?! Well, of course, the next round of X while X. I’m almost finished with my 34 While 34 list and have a fun update for how I did on the 33 While 33 list. Spoiler alert…I didn’t get them all done. Heh. Big surprise.

I’ve also been working out like a champ. There will be a big review of my Pure Barre experience so far and also an update on how I’m doing in the weight loss category in general.

FUN! See ya soon!
