Hi! Welcome to A Girl & Her Mutt!
My little space on the web started with a fun blog that I wrote to keep my parents informed on my (mis)adventures when I moved from the deep dirty South to the great white North for a job. Over time the blog has evolved and in June 2010, A Girl & Her Mutt created a permanent home on the web. My blog is dedicated to 3 things…Food. Fitness. Fun!
Just like many of us out there, I work every day to make the best choices for myself. Whether it be getting my butt to the gym or creating a wonderful and nutritious meal, I’m constantly making an effort to create a better version of myself. As I grow older I realize how much more important it is to make sure the food I am eating is nutritious and my wine delicious. All the fun that goes along with that journey is what makes life so great.
Meet The Girl…
My name is Erin and I am a 30 something-year-old woman living it up in the great city of Boston. I’m a computer nerd by day and an avid blogger, reader, cooker, knitter, Body Pumper, Zumba goer, and celebrity gossip enjoyer by night. I’m a bachelors graduate of the good ol’ Florida State University and my masters is from Troy University. An educated girl is an empowered girl, right? I was born and raised in the South so I can appreciate a good “Hey Ya’ll” greetin, Nascar, and camo.
Meet the Mutt…
Korky the Cutie Patutie Cocker Spaniel is officially considered a Senior Citizen. He is 12-years-old with the spirit of a puppy. We came together in 2002 through a rescue group in Florida and he has followed me up the East Coast. Kork is a huge fan of “treats”, snuggles and belly rubs. It doesn’t take much to win him over. He is my constant companion and the provider of unending love. That pup is one of a kind.
My Eating Philosophy…Clean, Lean & Green and Local Food Devotee.
In 2001 I stopped eating chicken, pork and beef. The reasons are numerous but it boils down to one thing…meat and my stomach don’t get along. I don’t know if I will stay meat free forever, but for now it works. (Note: In 2011 I started eating chicken and turkey again. See? I told you it may not be forever!) I do eat seafood, love sushi and can crack a crab claw with my hand like it was a twig.
After reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver I became fascinated with the idea of “eating local”. I did all types of research and unearthed a whole world of local farmer’s markets, container gardening, and local food devotees. It feels good to patronize local restaurants that are committed to serving food from local farmers and support my community in such an easy way. While I’m not perfect at being a locavore, I’m of the mindset that the effort is the most important. I live. I learn. Right?!
My love of food is a long and lustrous tale. It involves addiction to caffeine, a love of all things Mexican, and an introduction to incorporating that love into a healthy living lifestyle. My quest to a better me through better food is a continuous one, but I’m loving every minute of it!
My Wine Philosophy…Cheap Does Not Always Equal Bad.
Who says that good wine has to come with a hefty price tag? I was introduced to wine in college during a Wine Tasting class (yes! it was a real class!) and I’ve had a soft spot for it ever since. I’ve attended numerous tastings and classes to figure out what I don’t like and more importantly, what I do like. Learning to love wine doesn’t have to be complicated or stuffy. It should be fun and doesn’t have to break the bank. Over the past few years I have found plenty of great wines that are under a $15/bottle price tag, quite a few under $10, and even some under $5. Delicious wine is meant to be enjoyed so I say bottoms up! Cheers!
Note: I’ve now added beer to my repertoire. I’m no expert, but I know that Bud Light is out and Lagunitas and all things “craft” are in.
I hope that you enjoy my blog and come to visit often! Feel free to comment, email me, follow me on Twitter/Facebook, and become a part of the AGAHM community. Join me as Korky and I take a journey to enjoy life one workout, meal, glass of wine, and puppy dog kiss at a time!
