Project Happy Apartment!

by agirlandhermutt on February 1, 2011

I’m doing everything I can to keep my head above the snow. It’s a little bit difficult today seeing as how we are getting 20 inches more today. Whatevs.

Rather than dwell…lets take a look at some of the little things in my apartment that are making me happy.

Despite my love for all things Christmas I realized that the Christmas nook could not stay as is for the whole year. I haven’t exactly decided what I want to do with this corner of my living room so for now it houses a small desk and this newest accessory.

My cute little Martha Stewart Christmas tree came down and was replaced by this twig arrangement by Bethleham Lights. My mom surprised me with it to help cheer me up during the winter!

While you can tell that the flowers are fake from close-up, they look pretty real  from even just a short distance away. I love it! They have a variety of colors available, but I’m so glad I went for the red color.

My next step in Project Happy Apartment was in another corner of the living room. I’ve been struggling with buying adult furniture and getting rid of my college-like items. I always figure, if it works why change it. This is what I end up with.

Not exactly the mature look I was going for with the 100% IKEA set up. Winking smile

Hello tons of remote controls!

Oh, and did you see the best part of my set up? My coaster. Yep. Lindsay Lohan’s mugshot is my coaster. What?! I have a strange sense of humor.

My final change was up in the bathroom. My bathroom is TINY. Oh the joys of city apartment living. When I moved to my place I brought along the shower curtain. It was cute. It was girlie. I already had it.

Alas, I am almost 31 years old. It was time to retire the puff ball shower curtain.

Dig the birds? They seem to be a theme in my house. Check out the living room decal.

In addition to these minor little changes, I am adding some fun touches around the house. Including this funky flower vase my parents sent me.

Just add a touch of color and DONE!

And last, but certainly not least, is a project that I have still in the works. I ordered a few 5×7 prints of a few of my photos that I have taken over the year. I want to frame them for the kitchen. One of these is not like the other though.

Vertical destroyer of the horizontal family!

I removed this bad boy from the bunch and I realized that I have a nice photo collection of the four seasons. These will be appearing on my wall soon. WOOT!

Le sigh…I’m feeling so much better with all the happy touches in the house. I’m no Young House Love, but I do make myself happy. The Scientist is digging the changes. The mutt seems content. All is right with the AGAHM world.

You know…except the snow. Blah.

Taking back control…

by agirlandhermutt on October 15, 2010

I came home to find a little mess on my hands.  My pantry decided to revolt and throw up onto my kitchen floor.

I tried to blame it on Korky, but really its just my disorganized self that caused this little mess. I realize this doesn’t look like your typical pantry, but its a big city pantry. Ya get what ya get. 😉

I had a couple of things on the To Do list but  decided that this was top priority. Hello organized pantry.

While I was at it, I took care of the canned goods “pantry” too.

Things I do NOT need to purchase for several grocery store visits:

Polenta–I have 4 logs. WHY?!
Instant coffee–I don’t drink coffee at home. Where did this come from?Tuna—I am apparently preparing for an apocalypse.
Falafel—I must have experienced a shortage in my past life.
Chickpeas—11 cans. Yep. 11.
Black Beans—10 cans. Not as many as the chickpeas but on the verge of being a hoarder.

It felt good to do a little cleaning out and to see what I had going on in the way deep back of those cupboards. I’m feeling all kinds of recipe inspiration coming on! I’m also feeling a major overhaul of the fridge coming. *Shudder* Any volunteers?!

Q: Do you hoard any kinds of food? What are some must have pantry items that you always have?

Out of control…

by agirlandhermutt on August 6, 2010

My recycling for this week is out of control. Well, honestly, it isn’t exactly my recycling, but more that I keep getting things in the mail and I have all the boxes piled up in my living room. Lovely huh?!

Who lives like this?! I promise I’m not addicted to online shopping. *EEK!*

Last night was dedicated to getting my apartment back in working order.  I’ve been totally swamped with work and such that my house has suffered. Have you ever noticed that the minute your kitchen is out of order, the rest of your house is in disarray? How does this happen? I finally got my butt in the kitchen, cleaned up and added some much needed brightness to the place.

The Scientist has a knack for picking out the exact flowers that will make me smile. 🙂

After a full night of cleaning and getting everything in it’s place, it was time for a quick & easy meal. Whole wheat rotini, a little pesto sauce, and a nice glass of COLD wine. Mmmm…

In other random news, can we talk about the book I picked up at the library?

Yes! It is really called There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried To Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby. I totally didn’t even notice until I got a strange look on the train the other day. I am the creepy book reader this week! This book is a collection of short, but scary tales. I’m really enjoying it! This was a good way to get back into reading for enjoyment, which doesn’t happen much when I’m in school. Boooo.

Oh, and I realize that it wasn’t exactly kicking around the AGAHM site, but I hope I made it up to you with the super stellar recipe from SpaBettie!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Any book recommendations?! Any and all are accepted.
