Birthday

Brass Lantern Inn

by agirlandhermutt on February 16, 2012

When I was a kid my Mom had a thing for Bed & Breakfast places. I, on the other hand, was creeped out by them. They were old. They were close quarters. They were not impersonal hotels where I could roam around with no one knowing my name. Nope. B&B weren’t  for me. However, as an adult I have seen that B&Bs are not all old and moth ball scented. Many of them are wonderful Inns that are run by lovely people in lovely towns with lovely modern furniture. Just the right things to soothe this hotel lover’s soul.

This past weekend The Scientist found a gem of a B&B in Stowe, VT with the Brass Lantern Inn.

Mary Anne and George, the husband and wife team that run this joint, were so friendly! Mary Anne greeted us immediately when we arrived, gave us a little tour and let us get settled into our room.  The Inn includes a living room with ample seating space, a fireplace, beautiful piano, and TONS of reading material. There is also a bonus game room where there is a ping pong table, board games, fridge for use by all, a microwave, and even more seating space.

Our room wasn’t huge, but it had a gas fireplace and an awesome view of the mountains. Despite having a tv, we didn’t turn it on one single time. Each time we go on vacation we try to limit our technology use to the occasional email check on the phone. It is so nice to disconnect for a few days!

There was an outdoor hot tub and our bathroom included a jacuzzi. They were smart to post instructions in a cute way throughout the Inn so you didn’t have to ring someone up each time to figure out to use them.  There were also small touches like a Brita pitcher of water filled each day in the room, a few local chocolates on the bedside table, wine glasses with bottle openers available for use, and afternoon cookies & tea every day. Every little thing you could think of was covered.

Each evening the breakfast for the next morning was posted.

We were treated to a delicious breakfast made by George & in the well-lit dining room. We managed to snag a seat at the main window both days.

We started out breakfast with fresh fruit and our choice of juice.

One morning we had a hearty spiced apple muffin. I wish I was a better baker!

The first morning was an egg and ham stratta, but since I don’t do ham George was nice enough to whip up an omelet with spinach and mushrooms for me. That sucker was PACKED with veggies. The fun breakfast salad on the side was a nice sweet addition to my savory breakfast. I’ve never even thought of having a breakfast salad but I could see this becoming a part of my menu.

The next morning was belgian waffle day! We had our choice of maple syrup, maple blueberry syrup, maple bacon ice cream, or if you are The Scientist…all of the above. ;) I stuck with the blueberry syrup. It was the perfect combo of sweet and tart.

The Scientist’s version included a sausage link too. Maple bacon ice cream and sausage. The kid managed to shove it all down. I seriously have no idea where he puts it all! Kind of annoying really.

During a few breaks from our outdoor activities we lounged in our room enjoying the fire and the view. We also spent most of our nights relaxing by the fireplace, reading, and drinking hot cocoa.

We both decided that a gas fireplace is the way to go. This should be mandatory in any of my future homes.

If you are ever in the Stowe area definitely check out the Brass Lantern Inn. It is close to everything, easy to find and reasonably priced.

So I’ve officially changed my way of thinking as a 32 year old adult. Bed & Breakfasts are more than just stuffy old homes. My mom will be so pleased when she reads this post and I’m pretty sure an “I told you so” will be on its way shortly. ;)

Have you ever stayed at a Bed & Breakfast?

Once I stayed in a B&B that didn’t have a breakfast in the morning! It just had granola bars and a sign that said “Visit the restaurant down the street!” HA!

Weekend Recap: Sing-a-long, Sandwich, Ladies Brunch

by agirlandhermutt on November 14, 2011

Hello friends! This weekend was jam packed with friends and eating. Two of my most very favorite things. I have a lot of favorite things so the fact that these rank up there in the Top 5 should tell ya something.

The Scientist and I kicked this weekend off with his Boston birthday celebration (birthWEEK?! vs. birthDAY?). He had been talking my ear off about going to this restaurant that has a sing-a-long so we made it happen. Jacob Wirth is a German restaurant in town that has a good ol’ fashioned sing-a-long on Friday nights. Super fun with a nice rowdy bunch. We were joined by a few of his friends and the drinking/singing commenced.

I’m so glad The Scientist had a nice birthday this year and hopefully he remembers all this fun when mine comes around. ;) Kidding…kind of.

Saturday was a late start (surprise, surprise!) and I was seriously craving a sandwich. I did a random quick Yelp search for “turkey sandwich” and came up with a little deli not to far from me called Newton St Deli and Market. This convenience/sandwich combo store was not exactly what I was expecting, but I figured why the heck not. eek.

Oh.My.Gosh. I’m SO glad that I did give it a try. Not were the owners super friendly, the food is so FRESH. Our veggies were chopped right in front of us and the put together right in front of us.  My cracked pepper turkey topped with aged cheddar, lettuce, onions and mustard was DELISH. Paired with some chips it was the best weekend lunch in a while.

It was a beautiful day so we ate out on the porch and enjoyed the leaves changing color. Sandwiches, chips, and leaves. What a lovely little trio.

The rest of the day was dedicated to relaxing, watching movies and snuggling up with the pup. I wasn’t even one ounce of productive. Score.

Since I had such a bummy Saturday you would think I would pop up on Sunday and get to it. You would be right. I did hop up and get to it. It was BRUNCH.

My pal, Christie, invited a few of us over for one of her famous Ladies Brunch. These suckers are known to be multiple courses over multiple hours.

I need to warn you. This next photo montage is not doing any justice to Christie’s amazing meal. I can’t remember the names of anything and its mostly because I was too busy chowing down to listen really well. I knew I should have written everything down.

Big thanks to Christie for having us all over!!!

Ahhh…the perfect weekend of friends and eating! This week better be a good combo of work and working out now. Not nearly as fun, right?

I hope you guys all had a great weekend.

See ya tomorrow!

Do you like to have people over to your house? Are you the hostess with the mostess?

Weekend Rewind…

by agirlandhermutt on February 20, 2011

FRIDAY

It was a make-up birthday dinner at The Melting Pot courtesy of The Scientist. Hot cheese and chocolate fondue?! Yes, Please!

No birthday is complete without a candle to blow out. Smile

Update: My haircut ended up coming out ok! Phew. I wasn’t a huge fan of it the first night, but I’m much happier now that I have styled it myself.

Fun with the dippers. You can’t take us anywhere fancy.

It was a lovely night with a lovely date!

Saturday

I dragged my butt out of bed EARLY to hit the gym to work off the fondue. I’m pretty sure that the ladies on the elliptical next to me could hear the cheese and chocolate swishing around back and forth like an ocean in my belly.

The evening was spent enjoying some authentic South Indian food at a friend’s house. I love a dinner partay!

Delectable Dosa

Potato Masala

Lemon Rice

Payasam (dessert)

And wine. Lot of wine.

After we were stuffed to the brim we let our creativity juices flow in the form of writing captions for The New Yorker cartoons. I learned that I am quite the cheesy caption writer and The Scientist is quite the dry but witty caption writer. After we had gotten a few giggles in at everyone’s captions we went through the actual winners from The New Yorker. Eh. We were funnier.

Sunday

I Zumba’ed so hard that I almost threw my back out. Kidding…kind of. I had sweat dripping down parts of my body that I can’t even tell you about.

Sunday=Errands around here. Grocery shopping, menu planning, laundry and all things domestic were on the agenda. I was pretty proud of myself for getting everything accomplished!

Reward!

Although tomorrow is a holiday I have a packed agenda:

  • Bender Ball Pilates
  • Movie Watching
  • Knitting!

Hope you had a great weekend and get a good start to the week!

How many of you have tomorrow off from school/work? Will you be doing anything fun?
