Friday Five

5 in 5 Friday

by agirlandhermutt on July 12, 2013

Wh-wh-what?! How is it already Friday?! I’ve been busy trying to get back into the swing of things at work and the gym after having my Dad here with me for a week. I’m happy to report that I’m back on track on all fronts. Lets start the weekend off with a little 5 in 5 Friday!

5 in 5 Friday: Instagram Style

1. Five Things I Wore
Note: I need to clean my mirror! Eek.

2. Five Things I Ate

(From Top to Bottom; L to R: Seafood Stuffed Avocado at Cuchi Cuchi; Energy Drink every morning!, Grilled chicken with mashed cauliflower & salad, Shrimp Cauliflower “Risotto” that I ate on 2 days!)

3. Five Workouts I Did

-Strike Kick (like kickboxing)
-Total Body Melt (total body toning)
-Real Ryder Spinning
-Extreme Summer Shred & Tone It Up Workouts
-Hip Hop Yoga

4. Five Things I Am Looking Forward to This Weekend

-Going to see Pacific Rim at the IMax!
-Doing some outlet shopping
-Hitting the pool
-Total Body Melt with my fave strength instructor

5. Five Random Things I Am Up To Lately

-I’m participating in the Instagram challenge #TrulyCommitted from Truly Jess. My Extreme Summer Shred group was all encouraged to participate in this challenge too so the combo of teams is great! Each day we post a picture to correspond with the challenge. This week included Trying Something new, Sweating It Out, and What Motivates Me.

-I’m going DRY IN JULY! Well, technically dry from the 6th-the end of the month. I love my wine, beer and margaritas (which I enjoy plenty while my Dad was here!), but I know it slows down my weight loss. I’m holding off on the boozin’ for the next few weeks to see how my weight is affected.

-I signed up for an Ultimate Bootcamp after seeing a deal I couldn’t pass up on Groupon. Do you remember my experience with bootcamp? There was scampering involved. What am I doing?! My pal, Tiffany, is joining me so we can scamper together. It starts in August and goes for 4 weeks.

-There is an addiction to Laughing Cow that runs deep in my veins. I need to find some coupons.

Glossybox is still making an appearance on my front porch once a month. Anyone else belong to a monthly box subscription service?!

I hope you guys have a great weekend! Lets do this again next week, shall we?!

Fave Five Friday: Back on Track Edition

by agirlandhermutt on June 21, 2013

And just like that I am back to pre-vacation weight –1. Or is it +1? Either way, I’m down 41 lbs now. Lovely!

I say “just like that” with a little bit of sarcasm. It isn’t like I sat on my butt and the 4.4 lbs just fell off. I worked. I mean, I worked HARD. Clean eating. Working out. Staying off the couch.

Here are a few things that I did to get back on track and help me lose those pesky vacation pounds and also break the 40 lb plateau mark.

Fave Five Friday: Back on Track Edition

1. FitMixer Energy Drink

I got a sample of FitMixer’s Tigers Blood Clean Energy while at the Blend Retreat. I didn’t think much of it, but decided to give it a try randomly a few weeks ago. According to the FitMixer website, Clean Energy “contains Raspberry Ketones to help you burn fat quickly while maintaining energy levels throughout your workout*. It also delivers Palatinose®, a slow-burning carbohydrate designed to support sustained energy throughout the day. Tiger’s Blood fitmixer clean energy® contains natural colors and flavors from beets, strawberries, and coconuts, and is naturally energizing due to its main ingredients of Palatinose® and green tea and green coffee extracts.”

I added a scoop of this powder to 20 oz of water and then add in 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar (check out the benefits here!), 1 tbsp of lemon juice (stimulates digestion), and a shaky shaky of cinnamon (balances blood sugar levels) and cayenne pepper (raises blood temps to increase metabolism).  I shook it up and then drank it as I was getting ready for my day. On mornings when I workout this really gives me a nice boost too.

2. MyFitnessPal App
(Not my personal MFP!)

This app is nothing new to me or to most of you, but sometimes I forget what a great tool it is. In addition to looking up nutritional info on food and tracking calories, this app helps me keep track of recipes, measurement progress and logs workouts. I love looking at historical posts and seeing how my eating has improved or places I might need to pay special attention to (hello sodium intake!)

3. Summer Shred

I signed up on a whim for Bobbi McCormick’s, from NHerShoes, Summer Shred program right before leaving for San Diego. I’m a TIU devotee, but decided to shake it up. She had mentioned on her blog that she designed the program to involve minimal equipment and could be done at home. I figured it would be a good way to workout while away on vacation. Come to find out that the program includes so much more than a few home workouts. There are meal plans, shopping lists, printable workouts, links to various workout moves, and a supportive Facebook community. I’ve been sticking the workout plan more than the eating plan for the past 3 weeks and I can see definite muscle improvement, especially in my arms. I love how accessible Bobbi is for any questions and her interactions on all forms of social media with program participants.

Oh, and there is a July Summer Shred happening. Check out Bobbi’s blog for more info.

4. Heart Rate Monitor & Nike FuelBand

I put these together because while they are different products, they both do the same thing…motivate me to move more and work harder!

If you follow me on Instagram then you know I am obsessed with my heart rate monitor.

I don’t think it is 100% accurate, but it is 100% a motivator for me. I love seeing the calories burned number go up and sometimes might even push a little harder near the end of the class if I want to see the number hit a specific target. By utilizing the heart rate monitor while working out I have also been able to see my recovery time improve which is a sure sign of my fitness improving. So basically I huff and puff a lot less after my workouts than 3 months ago.

Nike FuelBand

GOAL! That is the ultimate thing to see on my little Fuelband at the end of the day. I wrote a detailed review that you can check out here, but basically it motivates me throughout the day to do little things to get a few extra steps in. Take the steps instead of the escalator you lazy butt. Go the long way instead of the shortcut through the parking lot. Why did you sit down instead of just standing and walking around? Sometimes just seeing that black band on my wrist is enough of a reminder to get moving.

This one is a no brainer, but the easiest one to forget. If I drink the water, my weight continues to come off. I have proven it time and time again. The minute I slip up on the water intake, like on vacation or even the weekends, I see my weight loss stall. I drink about a 100 oz a day. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, but I aim for 100. I am *obsessed* with selzter water so I tend to drink that when I am out to dinner or home. But when I’m running around or at work, I fill up my Klean Kanteen repeatedly to get that water in. For more info on why drinking water is healthy for ya body, check out this article from TIU.

Have a great weekend! It is supposed to be pretty hot here so I’m taking this as my sign to stay inside and get some decluttering done. Fun huh? I’ll also be working out and then spending some time with my girlfriends. WHHEEEEE!

See ya Monday!

*Just a note: Everything I mentioned in this post I bought and paid for myself, including the Summer Shred program. There are no affiliate links in this post.*

Fave Five Friday: The Mutt Edition + GIVEAWAY!

by agirlandhermutt on June 14, 2013

Since I returned from vacation my little love muffin, Korky, has been a big ol’ snugglebug. I love when he gets in the mood to actually like me instead of just tolerate me. Most of the time he could do without me, until it comes time for dinner. I’ve been taking advantage of all the snuggles and have been petting him nonstop. He is just too cute. *Insert me making that little squishy face noise*

Since my love for the dog is strong, lets do a special dog friendly edition of Fave Five Friday!

Fave Five Friday: The Mutt Edition

1. I’m starting off the list with something that, as a dog owner, I absolutely love. Korky hates this thing. The FURMINATOR. It is a simple looking brush, but this sucker gets to the root of those loose hairs. What would normally end up on your floor or black pants, is removed with a simple brush. I can’t promise that lab owners will see as much success (, but for dogs like Kork this works perfectly!

2. Finding the right food for Korky has been a lifelong process. Heh. That is how I know he is part of the family. We have tried a few types of food over the years with success with just one. It was working great until they changed the formula. The result? Dog crap all over my house for 3 days straight. It was awful. After a big huge professional scrub down of the place I started to research food that people had found success with. Wellness Pet Food came up a few times. We use the Complete Health Super5Mix Lamb, Barley, and Salmon Recipe. Since we started the food I have been able to easily maintain Korky’s weight and his bathroom breaks are much less traumatic.

3. Professional Dog photos are a must for you dog lovers. I know people think it is silly that I had them done, but honestly…they are just perfect. Dog Breath Photography could not have captured Korky’s spirit and personality better. If you are in the market for a photographer who specializes in getting hard to train, overactive, slightly blind and deaf dogs to cooperate for photos then this is the lady for you.

4. I’m a lover of dog clothing. I will admit it. I appreciate a good dog costume. I love a cute and witty dog shirt. But nothing is as cute as a dog in a bow tie. This is the current one that I am in love with from Etsy shop LittleBlueFeathers.

5. Just like I love supporting my local food and wine providers, I love supporting my local dog friendly hot spots. Two of my favorite dog related stores in town are Polka Dog Bakery, a bakery just for the animals in your life,  and the LaundroMutt, a DIY dog wash station that makes clean up at home a thing of the past. Korky is a fan too. Two paws up!

In addition to all the great things above, I also love a good dog related event. This year dogs and their humans will be gathering together in Canton, Ma at Prowse Farms on the weekend of June 22-23rd for the first annual POOCH-A-PALOOZA Festival.

The weekend will be filled with live music, food trucks, interactive kids’ zone, and a large marketplace to check out all kinds of dog and human products. When this festival calls itself “family-friendly” they truly mean the whole family! Bring Fido and enjoy a lovely day with other dog lovers. Oh, and I can’t forget the beer garden!

Advance tickets for Pooch-A-Palooza are on sale now.  Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $8 for children, and $12 for seniors.  Dogs are admitted free of charge but must be leashed.  Ticket prices day of the festival will be $20 for adults, $10 for children, and $15 for seniors.  Children 2 and under are free. To purchase advance tickets, visit

The lovely folks at Pooch-A-Palooza were kind enough to give me 2 pairs of tickets to giveaway! You and guest can enjoy the festival with or without a dog.

Interested in going?!

1. Comment on this post and let me know what your favorite breed of dog is. Don’t have a favorite?! Pick cocker spaniel. 😉

Have a great weekend everyone! See ya Monday!
